Women’s basketball races past Paul Quinn College 76-42

The women’s basketball team defeated Paul Quinn College (PQC) 76-42 on Jan 5. The Saints improve to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Tigers fall to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in RRAC play.

Head Coach Tanya Ray said, “Anytime you can get a win on the road it’s good. I’m glad we were able to get a lot of people involved offensively.”

Basics
The Saints shut down the Tigers on Thursday night. OLLU jumped out to a 21-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Three Saints players finished with double digit points and Natalia Trevino was one rebound shy of a double-double. The Saints forced 14 turnovers by the Tigers and limited Paul Quinn to under 30 percent shooting. OLLU was strong on the boards with 16 offensive rebounds and added 14 assists.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Carrie Barrera-Lacy, Tiffany Lopez and Trevino led the team with 12 points each. Trevino had a team-high nine rebounds. Trevino and Ariadna Gallardo finished with four assists each.

Adrianna Belton led PQC with 15 points. Marquise Nelson grabbed 11 rebounds for the Tigers. Ahlura Lofton led the team with five assists.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 33-of-75 shooting for 44 percent, 7-of-22 from three-point range for 31.8 percent and 3-of-4 from the three-throw line for 75 percent. PQC shot 16-of-60 for 26.7 percent, 5-of-17 three pointers for 29.4 percent and 5-of-10 from the free-throw line for 50 percent.

The Saints grabbed 50 rebounds while Paul Quinn collected 35.

Men’s basketball squeezes by Paul Quinn College 70-67

The men’s basketball team earned a 70-67 victory over Paul Quinn College (PQC) on Jan. 5. The Saints improve to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Tigers drop to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in RRAC play.

Head Coach Chris Dial commented, “This was a tough road win in a conference where those aren’t easy to come by. It wasn’t pretty basketball, but I was proud of our effort. We now shift our attention to Saturday.”

Basics
The Saints snuck by Paul Quinn in a close game on Thursday. OLLU led by four points at halftime and limited the Tigers to under 30 percent shooting from three-point range. The Saints never trailed in the second half, but the Tigers came within one point with 45 seconds remaining. Daniel Helterhoff hit a key jump shot to give the Saints a three-point advantage. The Saints defense stepped up to stop a three-point attempt with time running down to earn the victory. Five OLLU players finished with double digit scoring.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Helterhoff led the Saints with 14 points. Tommie Law grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and added 13 points for a double-double. Ruben Monzon and Georges Darwiche led the team with three assists each.

Henry Hampton led Paul Quinn with 13 points. Mohammed Bensalah grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and added 11 points for a double-double. Ja’mere Redus finished with four assists.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 25-of-54 shooting for 46.3 percent, 9-of-24 from three-point range for 37.5 percent and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for 84.6 percent. PQC shot 28-of-74 for 37.8 percent, 7-of-27 three pointers for 25.9 percent and 4-of-13 from the free-throw line for 30.8 percent.

The Saints grabbed 44 rebounds while Paul Quinn collected 35.

Saints volleyball impresses in sweep of Paul Quinn College

The volleyball team swept Paul Quinn College (PQC) on Saturday. The Saints improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Tigers fall to 0-6 and 0-2 in the RRAC.

History
The Saints were 6-0 against the Tigers prior to the matchup.

Basics
The Saints defeated the Tigers in three sets on Saturday. They won all three sets 25-19 and held PQC to under .100 hitting percentage in every frame. The first set was back and forth scoring before the Saints went on a run after a 15-15 tie. Kills by Camila Ramirez and Tijana Kruta helped OLLU seal the first set. The second set saw another tie at 11-11. The Saints prevailed late in the set with more kills from Ramirez. The Tigers didn’t make the victory easy for the Saints in the third set. OLLU led 18-14 but the Tigers tallied four straight points to even the score. Mia Francis made two huge plays to give the Saints momentum following the tie. Paul Quinn made a few attacking errors late to give the Saints the victory.

In the first set, OLLU recorded 15 kills and 10 errors on 42 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .119.

In the third set, OLLU recorded 14 kills and eight errors on 34 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .176.

On the offense
Overall, the Saints had 42 kills for a hitting percentage of .132. Paul Quinn totaled 22 kills for a hitting percentage of -.010.

Dorsey led the Saints with nine kills. Shelbriana Myers and Kennadi Harris totaled a team-high eight kills each for the Tigers.

Rebekah Bustamante assisted on 38 plays for the Saints while Jayda Trinidad tallied 22 assists for Paul Quinn.

Defensive standouts
OLLU had a total of 47 digs, led by Tina Trevino with 14. Kesmyre Smalls tallied 11 digs for the Tigers.

Serving it up
Ramirez had three service aces for the Saints. Marquise Nelson had the only service ace for Paul Quinn.
