Women’s basketball finishes No. 16 in final NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll

The women’s basketball team dropped one spot in the final NAIA DI Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Final Top 25 Poll of the season, falling to No. 16, the national office announced Wednesday. The Saints are 1-1 since the previous poll was released on Feb. 28, defeating Huston-Tillotson University in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament semifinals before losing to Louisiana State University-Shreveport in the championship game.

OLLU is the only RRAC team in the top 25, though LSU-Shreveport did receive 48 votes. The Saints clinched their fifth consecutive regular season conference title this season and will make their sixth NAIA Women’s Basketball National Tournament appearance. The fourth-seeded Saints will face fifth-seeded The Master’s on Wednesday, March 15 at 9:45 p.m. This year’s NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship is being held in Billings, Mont.

Baseball splits doubleheader with Huston-Tillotson University

Inclement weather cut short another conference series, leaving the baseball team and the Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) Rams with a split 1-1 series. In Friday’s doubleheader, the Saints got out to a quick start in the first game for a 10-5 win; but struggled to string together enough hits in the second game, falling 2-7 for the first loss to HTU in the history of the program. OLLU is now 9-12 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. HTU is 6-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

OLLU women’s basketball loses to LSU-Shreveport in RRAC Tournament Championship

After capturing its fifth conference title, women’s basketball defeated Huston-Tillotson University in the semifinals, but lost to Louisiana State University-Shreveport in the championship game. The women will await the announcement of their fifth national tournament seeding later this week. Alyssa Ward was named RRAC Defensive Player of the Year, and she was joined by Julia Rendon for First-Team All-Conference. Jessika Montalvo and Quintianna LeShore were named to the Honorable Mention Team, and Annie Lenoir was named to the Champions of Character Team. Read more.

OLLU softball wins one of three to Southwest

The softball team traveled to New Mexico to play two conference doubleheaders against the University of the Southwest. The Saints won one of four games. On the first day, the Saints lost 3-2 and 10-9, and on the second day, they lost the first game 1-0 and one the last one 5-3. The Saints will host Louisiana State University-Alexandria on Friday and Saturday for two doubleheaders. Read more.

Staff Organization recognizes Employees of the Month

During the February Staff Organization meeting the December and January Employees of the Month were recognized.

Maria E. Gonzales from Housekeeping received the recognition for December. Maria was described by Nina Gutierrez as “always going above and beyond the normal housekeeping scope. Maria helps in making a safe and pleasant work environment. She lays out extra carpet when it is raining to help anyone walking in with wet shoes.”

Luis Forestier from Information Technology Services was recognized as the January Employee of the Month. Luis stepped up to the plate when an emergency situation arose causing him to take on the Help Desk manager’s duties. Raquel Moncado stated, “He ensured there was coverage at the Helpdesk. He came in on a Saturday morning when there wasn’t any student coverage. He did all this without any complaints and volunteered to help me out.”

Staff Advisory Council open meeting on Wednesday

The OLLU Staff Advisory Council will be holding an open meeting on Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m. in Main Building, Room 311. Staff Advisory committees will discuss current and upcoming projects. Attendees also will have an opportunity to meet their representatives and provide feedback.

Professor Khan presents during UTSA communication week

Hamid Khan EDD, PE, professor of management, was invited to speak at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s communications week, which had the theme, “Dare to Listen.” The subject of his presentation was “Nascent Leadership Potential: Communicating Your ‘Psychological Capital’ And ‘Psychological Ownership.’”
