Professor Quintanilla wins Ambroggio Poetry Prize

Octavio Quintanilla, PhD, Professor of English, has won the Ambroggio Poetry Prize given by the Academy of American Poets for “Las Horas Imposibles/The Impossible Hours,” which will be published by the University of Arizona Press in Spring 2025.

The Ambroggio Prize is given for a book-length poetry manuscript originally written in Spanish and with an English translation. Winners receive $1,000 and publication in the University of Arizona Press, a nationally recognized publisher of emerging and established voices in Latinx and Indigenous literature. 

“Las Horas Imposibles/The Impossible Hours” was co-translated by Quintanilla and Natalia Treviño.

Quintanilla is a former San Antonio Poet Laureate and the author of the poetry collections, “If I Go Missing” (Slough Press, 2014) and “The Book of Wounded Sparrows” (Texas Review Press, 2024). A native of Mexico, Treviño is the author of the poetry collection “Lavando La Dirty Laundry” (Mongrel Empire Press, 2014) and the chapbook “VirginX (Finishing Line Press, 2018).

Lake Day Orientation continues June 24

The OLLU community is excited to welcome incoming freshmen and their families to Lake Day Orientations on various dates throughout the summer. Please help us in welcoming them!

Lake Day Orientation (LDO) is a full-day program designed to introduce students and their families to life at OLLU. At LDO, you will:

  • Make connections with faculty, staff, upperclassmen, and other incoming students
  • Learn about the OLLU mission and culture
  • Learn about OLLU’s support services
  • Talk directly with professors and learn about the requirements of your intended majors and minors
  • Have multiple opportunities to have any financial and advising questions answered

Dates for orientation are:

  • Friday, July 12
  • Saturday, July 20
  • Thursday, August 15

Lake Day Orientation Schedule:

  • 8 – 8:40 a.m. – Check-in and Light Breakfast
  • 9 a.m. – Welcome & University Mission
  • 9:45 a.m. – Saints Connection Sessions
  • 10:30 a.m. – Break
  • 10:45 a.m. – Student Support Resources
  • 11:30 a.m. – Academics 101
  • 11:50 a.m. – Lunch & Athletic Meeting 
  • 1:10 p.m. – Academic Exploration Session 1
  • 1:45 p.m. – Academic Exploration Session 2
  • 2:10 p.m. – Resource Fair
  • 2:30 p.m. – Check Out & Task Time

Academic sessions will be held in various classrooms within the Main Building, while the other sessions will take place in Chapel Auditorium.

Office of Information Technology Services warns of phishing email 

The Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) would like to bring to your immediate attention a confirmed phishing email that has been circulating within our community. The email in question has the subject line: “PART-TIME ADMIN/ASSISTANT OPPORTUNITY!!” and appears to come from a faculty member.

Please be advised that this email is a phishing attempt designed to deceive recipients into divulging one’s financial information.

If you receive an email with this subject line, do not open it, click any links, or download any attachments. Instead, please take the following actions immediately:

  1. Click the red fish button on your Outlook ribbon.
  2. Click the Report button to notify our ITS department.

If you responded to the bogus email you may have received a follow-on call from an actor identifying himself as Dorin Morgos, subsequently inquiring about your financial institution and account information as part of the hiring ruse. DO NOT provide any financial information as this is not a legitimate job offer.

Please contact your Information Security Officer immediately for further assistance if you believe you have been victimized by this phishing campaign.

Your prompt action will help us to mitigate any potential risks and protect our organization’s data and security.

Construction continues on ‘makerspace’ in Metz Hall

Construction continues on the third floor of Metz Hall for makerspace, an area that will  facilitate hands-on active and collaborative experiential learning activities. 

A subfloor has been installed in the makerspace. Framing is going up and electrical and plumbing work are in process. Sheetrock installation should begin this week.

Completion is expected in August.

Food Pantry changes name to ‘The Salud Center’

The OLLU Food Pantry has changed its name to “The Salud Center.”

Still located in Room 29 at the Worden School of Social Service Building, The Salud Center provides food and select groceries for clients and a training program for Social Work interns.

To obtain food, clients must complete a few required forms. Clients may pick up food twice a month.

Graduation application deadline set for Aug. 1

The fall 2024 Graduation Application is available in the “Graduation” tile on Saints Connect. If you plan to graduate at the end of the fall 2024 semester, please submit the graduation application before the Aug. 1 deadline.
