Inaugural BLUE OUT to take place at Friday’s basketball games

BlueOutPromotionsThe University will hold its Inaugural BLUE OUT on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. to promote the women’s and men’s basketball games against Jarvis Christian College. Free limited edition t-shirts will be given out to those who come to the women’s game, which takes place at 5:30 p.m., while supplies last. During the women’s game, attendees will have the opportunity to win a Kindle Fire, Saints Basket and various gift cards. During the men’s game, which begins at 7:30 p.m., fans will have the chance to win an iPad Mini, a Fit Bit Wrist Band and various gift cards. In addition, one student with the most spirit (both games) will win a $50 movie pack. One student group with the most spirit (both games) will win a pizza party. Winners must be present at both games and will be announced at end of men’s game. Students and groups must register by Wednesday with Liz Longoria at elongoria@ollusa.edu to participate. Reminder that all students, staff and faculty must show their ID to get free admission to the games. Admission for children, 7-17, is $3 and for alumni and adults, 18-older, is $5.

Join OLLU during the Martin Luther King Jr. March on Monday

The OLLU community is invited to participate in one of the country’s largest Martin Luther King Jr. marches, Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in front of the MLK Academy. San Antonio’s annual MLK March is organized by the MLK, Jr. Commission to pay tribute to Dr. King. It is the conclusion of a week of educational, inspirational and celebratory events across the city known as “DreamWeek.”

For those who wish to attend, a bus is being provided by the Institutional Advancement Office to transport people from OLLU to the beginning of the route and back to OLLU after the March. The bus will hold 32 people, and is first come, first served. The bus will be at OLLU at 8:30 a.m. and will return at 1:30 p.m.

To sign up to ride the bus, visit the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) in the Worden School, Room 23. If there is not enough room on the bus for everyone who wishes to attend, there will also be carpooling available at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Worden School. Those who wish to meet at the March can look for the OLLU banner at the beginning of the route at 9:30 a.m.

Students who participate in the March can earn service hours through the CSLV. Hours will begin at 10 a.m. and run through the end of the March (approximately 2.25 hours).

HALO students can earn three HALO points for participating in the March.

Help OLLU improve ‘Best of the West,’ enter to win $50 gift certificate

BOTW2014“Best of the West,” OLLU’s official Fiesta® event, is entering its third year and the Institutional Advancement Office would like to hear from the OLLU community to help make this year’s event the best so far. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to take this survey to provide their feedback on the event.

Once the survey is completed, participants will have the opportunity to submit their name and contact information for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate for OLLUSaintsGear.com where they can order a variety of apparel, spirit and decorative items branded with the OLLU or Saints logo.

This year’s “Best of the West” event is scheduled to take place on campus April 5, 2014.

History Department presenting two PBS documentaries

The History Department is teaming up with the Center for Mexican American Studies and Research to present two PBS documentaries this semester to promote the new Bachelor of Arts in History degree with a concentration in Integrated Digital and Public History.

ManyRiverstoCrossThe first documentary that will be screened is, “African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross.” The first installment of the film will be screened tomorrow from 12:30-1:20 p.m. The film, by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, PhD, chronicles the rich history of African Americans in the United States from the horrors of slavery to the triumph of President Barack Obama. The film will be screened weekly through February.

LatinoAmericansThe second documentary is, “Latino Americans: The 500-Year Legacy that Shaped a Nation.” The documentary, based on Ray Suarez’s book of the same title, is the first major documentary film series about Latinos in the United States, from the Spanish Colonial Period to the Chicano Movement. Screening of the film will begin in March and run through April.

Softball holds inaugural Winter Camp on Saturday

The Saints softball team held its first-ever Winter Camp on Saturday at the softball field. Fewer than 10 registered, but more than 20 walked up for the camp that took place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The youngsters received lessons on pitching, hitting and fielding from members of the team.

Women’s basketball cruises through 39-point win over Paul Quinn

The women’s basketball team cruised through a 39-point win over Paul Quinn College on Saturday. The 82-43 win moves the Saints to 11-1 overall and remain 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference. Paul Quinn, a member of the Red River but ineligible for the post-season, drops to 0-8. Sequestiny O’Neal, Nelly Flores and Destiny Melton led the Saints’ offense as all scored in double digits. O’Neal scored a career-high 20 points, including career-high field goals made and attempted (8-17) and 3-pointers made and attempted (4-6). She also added a career-high three assists and tied a career-high five rebounds.  Flores scored a season-high 18 points and added a career-high 18 rebounds to finish with her third career double-double. Melton matched her season-best 10 points and added a career-high 19 rebounds to finish with her first double-double. Freshman Jessica Walaski recorded a career-high 18 rebounds, eight on offense and 10 on defense. Read full story online.

Men’s basketball wins one of two on the road

MBB1-11Despite leading through most of the game, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men’s basketball team was unable to pull off the win against conference opponent University of St. Thomas last Friday. The Saints lost 74-80. On Saturday, the Saints came back to annihilate Paul Quinn College with a 125-77 win. The Saints are now 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference. St. Thomas improves to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. Paul Quinn, a member of the Red River but ineligible for the post season, drops to 0-10 overall. Read full story online.
