Students who plan to participate in the December 2017 graduation must apply for graduation by Friday, April 7, 2017. Students must apply online through WebAdvisor.

The Mission and Ministry Division is seeking 25 OLLU students to serve as college mentors for a high school theology institute from June 7-17, 2017. Students will provide logistical support and help facilitate activities and discussions designed to help high school students deepen their faith and apply it toward challenges within their community.

Mentors must be available all day and evening during the institute. On-campus housing and food will be provided during the event. A $1,500 stipend will be offered to the mentors upon successful completion of responsibilities.

To apply, download and complete the application. Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, Feb. 14 by 5 p.m. in the Elliott House.

Six OLLU McNair scholars have been selected to present their research at the 31st Annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of Memphis in April.

During the fall 2016 semester, more than 245 students offered service to the San Antonio community through one or more of the 21 service-learning courses offered in partnership with area nonprofit organizations. One of the semester’s service-learning projects was in COMM 3338 “Marketing for the Media” with Dr. Eilene Wollslager. As part of the course, students worked in teams to develop holistic media marketing plans for two area nonprofits: Green Spaces Alliance and Christian Assistance Ministry.

Each semester, the OLLU Center for Service-Learning & Volunteerism collaborates with faculty across various departments to offer academic service-learning classes. The classes provide opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience that connects back to and enhances their classroom learning, as well as meets the needs of nonprofit organizations in the greater San Antonio community.

 

Students are invited to visit the Elliott House for “Loaves and Fishes” where they can get brain food during finals week. Food will be available Monday-Thursday from 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Members of the OLLU chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), otherwise known as the CyberSaints, recently competed in “Panoply,” a national network security competition. During the contest, teams competed to “hack” and gain control of computer systems and defend them from other attacking teams. The team finished in fifth place in the nation.

The OLLU Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) is pleased to announce that the President’s Volunteer Service Award has been awarded to 28 students. who have completed at least 100 hours of community service within the 2015-2016 academic school year.

The purpose of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a White House initiative, is to motivate Americans to reach out to their community and dedicate their time to transforming our society into a more stable environment.

The honor is awarded to those who have completed at least 100 hours of service within a year. The award is given at the bronze, silver and gold levels. The bronze medal is awarded to those who complete 100-174 hours, the silver medal is awarded to those who complete at least 175 hours, and the gold medal is awarded to those who complete 250 hours or more.

Eight students (Alexandra Berrones, Abigail Garcia, Michael Garcia, Celeste Hernandez, Tiffany Hernandez, Rebecca Olivarez, Maria Perez and Samantha Perez) are receiving the award for the second consecutive year, and two (Marta Diaz and Kelly Fernandez) are receiving the award for the third consecutive year.

To earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award, students should complete at least 100 CSLV-approved hours of community service between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2017.

The CSLV will track all approved service hours for all students, whether or not they are aiming for this award. To get hours tracked, participants must submit a Request for Service Project Approval Form. Once the project is approved, the CSLV will enter the hours into its service database.

The CSLV can also provide students a transcript of service hours logged.
